So grab your lightsaber (or your favorite reading snack), and let’s dive into the next round of stories from a universe far, far away.

Star Wars: Scoundrels

Timothy Zahn

★★★☆☆
Star Wars: Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn delivers a fun, heist-style story featuring Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian, but it doesn’t quite capture the high stakes and emotional depth fans might expect. While the concept of a "Star Wars meets Ocean's Eleven" caper is enticing, the execution feels bogged down by a slow pace and an overly complex plot. Zahn's trademark sharp characterizations shine in moments, but the narrative lacks the energy needed to keep the momentum going. While enjoyable for hardcore fans of Han and his rogue antics, casual readers may find it less gripping than Zahn’s other Star Wars novels. A decent read, but not among the galaxy’s best.

Inferno Squad

Christie Golden

★★★☆☆
Inferno Squad by Christie Golden is a solid addition to the Star Wars universe, delivering an action-packed story that delves into the morally complex world of Imperial loyalty. The book follows the elite Inferno Squad on a mission to infiltrate a rebel group, offering a fascinating perspective on the Empire’s operatives. While the premise is intriguing, the characters sometimes feel underdeveloped, making it hard to fully connect with their struggles. The pacing is uneven, with moments of thrilling tension interspersed with slower, less engaging sections. Despite these flaws, it’s an enjoyable read for fans eager to explore the grittier side of the Star Wars saga.

Star Wars: Allegiance

Timothy Zahn

★★★★☆
Star Wars: Allegiance by Timothy Zahn is a thrilling dive into the gray areas of loyalty and morality within the galaxy far, far away. Zahn masterfully balances action, political intrigue, and character development, weaving together the journeys of Mara Jade, a squad of rogue stormtroopers, and the classic trio of Luke, Han, and Leia. The novel captures the tension of the early rebellion while offering fresh perspectives on Imperial defectors. While the pacing lags at times, the intricate plot and Zahn’s deep understanding of Star Wars lore make this a compelling read for fans.

Heir to the Jedi

Kevin Hearne

★★★★☆
Heir to the Jedi by Kevin Hearne is a fun, action-packed addition to the Star Wars universe that offers a unique glimpse into Luke Skywalker’s early days as a Jedi. Written entirely from Luke’s first-person perspective, the novel gives readers a more personal look at his struggles, growth, and uncertainties as he navigates missions for the Rebel Alliance. Hearne captures Luke’s voice well, adding depth to his character while keeping the pacing brisk and full of classic Star Wars adventure. While the plot itself isn’t as epic as some other Star Wars novels, and a few moments feel a bit light, it’s an enjoyable read that earns a solid 4 stars for its fresh take on a beloved hero.

Star Wars: Choices of One

Timothy Zahn

★★★☆☆
Choices of One by Timothy Zahn is a solid addition to the Star Wars expanded universe, offering plenty of action, intrigue, and the strategic twists Zahn is known for. Set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the novel brings back beloved characters like Mara Jade and Thrawn, and it does a great job capturing their voices and motivations. However, while the plot is engaging, it can feel overly complicated at times, with multiple storylines that don't always flow smoothly together. The pacing also lags in parts, making it harder to stay fully invested. Still, for fans of Zahn’s Star Wars work, Choices of One is an enjoyable read that earns a respectable 3 stars.
