Summary from Goodreads:

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Review:

This book brought me back to my fantasy roots and reminded me why I love this genre in the first place.

The author has woven a wonderful tale of immortal creatures in a battle with those who want to take away their way of living. Of course, nothing is as it seems and even the main character finds herself twisted to fit within the mold of the role she has been forced to play.

While we follow Poppy throughout the whole story, the pain and struggles she is forced to endure, to be pure, to finally be ascended, but then Hawk shows up and I instantly fell in love with him. He is the protector, always on guard to keep Poppy safe after tragedy struck her last guard. The story twist and turns and for a while there, I lost all faith in Hawk as his character almost turned toward a dark place. I didn't know who to trust and frankly, neither did Poppy.

When the story finally came to a head, the truth is revealed about the real reason for all the fighting. And of course, Poppy and Hawk relationship is as complicated as they come. The book ends on a cliffhanger that only makes me want to read the next book more. I can't wait to get my pretty little hands on it.

This is a steamy book, so if you are not much for the heavy romance, then you are missing out on a wonderful love story amongst the paranormal aspects.

Absolutely loved this book!
