Welcome to this edition of Page Breaks, where I share the books I started with high hopes but ultimately had to set aside. DNFing (Did Not Finish) a book is never easy—especially when the premise sounds promising or the cover begs to be judged—but sometimes, a story just doesn’t click. Whether it was pacing, character disconnect, or just a case of “not the right book at the right time,” here’s a look at the titles I parted ways with recently—and why.
A Sea of Unspoken Things
Adrienne YoungI had high hopes for A Sea of Unspoken Things after absolutely loving the first book I read by Adrienne Young, but unfortunately, this one just didn’t work for me. At 45%, I found myself struggling to stay engaged as the pacing felt painfully slow, and the story lacked the excitement I was hoping for. While I still adore the author's style, this particular book just felt tedious and boring, and I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. It’s disappointing when a follow-up doesn’t live up to the promise of a fantastic first read, but I’m still hopeful for their future work.
Slaying the Shadow Prince by Helen Scheuerer was one I wanted to love—the premise had all the makings of an epic romantic fantasy—but unfortunately, I was lost from the very beginning. The world-building felt dense and underexplained, leaving me struggling to grasp the stakes or connect with the characters. While the writing has a lyrical quality and the concept holds potential, the story never quite grounded me enough to stay invested. I ultimately set this one aside early on, hoping it might resonate better with readers who enjoy diving headfirst into immersive, complex fantasy worlds without a gradual setup.
