August Movies - Part 2

Welcome back for another edition of my monthly movie reviews. In part 2, we have some new releases and some that have been out for a while now. Also, some that I have seen before but love to watch again. Lets get started.

Before We Go (2014) - I didn't realize this movie came out two years ago. I thought it was a recent release, but what ever. Didn't stop me from watching it.

In the movie, the main characters run into each other in the middle of the night in Manhattan. They don't know each other, they will never see each other again after the night is over. For some strange reason, Alice Eve's character trust Chris Evan's character and they talk and talk and talk, all night. Spoiler alert, they even kiss...

I got really board with the dialog, because that seemed to be all there was, and I waited patiently for something to happen that was exciting, but it never did. I almost turned it off, but the movie was on my Chris Evan's list so I decided to finish it.

If you like quiet romantic dramas, then you will probably like this movie. As for myself, I was not impressed. If you're think about watching Before We Go, but are on the fence, watch the trailer here

I give this movie a 2 out of 5 stars for terribly unbelievable story line, but good acting.

Survivor (2015) - Everyone who knows me will tell you that I am a big fan of Mila Jovavich. I think she is awesome, but this movie... Not one of my favorites.

The movie is about a customs agent (Jovavich) who digs too deep into a man that is coming into the country and someone tries to kill her. There's lots of conspiracy, her boss is dirty and it has Pierce Brosnan playing an assassin that just can't kill his mark, poor guy.

There was lots of action, but I found myself not really paying attention to the movie, I don't know if it was just that I was distracted by other things or if the movie was just that bland? Check out the trailer here, if you want.

I'm going to give this movie 3 out of 5 stars for an epic ending and that snarl on Brosnan's face.

Into The Woods (2014) - I love all the people who act in this movie. Lets just face it, I love this movie and you're not going to tell me otherwise. I understand that not everyone likes a good musical, but I grew up on ones such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Grease. I can't help myself.

If you too like musicals and you love Meryl Streep, Chris Pin, Anna Kendrick, Jame Cordon, Johnny Depp and Emily Blunt (Say that five times fast) then sit down and watch this movie.

The cast of characters take you on an adventure through the woods, each looking for something. The baker wants a child. Jack needs to sell his cow, but doesn't want to. Red is going to visit her sick grandmother and Cinderella is running from a prince. All their stories converge when a giant threatens the lands and the truth about their characters comes to a head. Can they all hold it together long enough to save themselves, or will they fall apart and allow the giant to kill Jack? You're going to have to watch to find out. Here is the trailer.

This movie is going to get a 5 out of 5 stars from me, because James Cordon is awesome! True story...

Goosebumps (2015) - I know a lot of us read Goosebumps books when we were kids. Well, this freaky thriller lives up to those books and gives us a twist that intertwine the books in with the movie plot.

This teen moves next door to a weirdo with a daughter, but of course the teen and his nasty boy hormones can't stay away, and brakes into their house when the weird dad is out. Something happens, of course, and the Goosebumps books that hold the monster are opened, releasing their havoc on the whole town.

The whole movie is spent trying to figure out how to get the freaking things back into the books before they destroy the town. There are scary little gnomes, and a giant yeti, and don't forget a rally creepy ventriloquist dumby named Slappy. You remember Slappy?

Check out the trailer here.

I'm going to give this movie a 4 out of 5 stars, because Jack Black is awesome, but I would have liked to be freaked out a little more.

#WeeklyMenu Week: 159

We're back from vacation! I can't believe all the things we take for granted at home, like a comfy couch and bed. A bathtub and the cool AC.

We went to the Oregon Coast, not to escape the heat, but to escape the people and go figure, it was the hottest weekend of the summer and the place was packed. To make things worse, there was no AC where we stayed and all we had was a small fan to move the stifling air around. It was miserable on Friday. Thankfully, Saturday and Sunday cooled down to a wonderful 65 degrees and it even rained Sunday morning.

The boys had a blast and we even discovered some new eats that I will definitely be adding to my Cannon Beach Visitors Guide shortly.

Enjoy this weeks normal menu!

#Review of Soulless by Jacinta Maree @JacintaMaree6

Title: Soulless
By: Jacinta Maree
Genre: Urban Fantasy / Dystopian
Release Date: October 1st, 2015
Publisher: Inked Rabbit Publishing

Summary from Goodreads:
Welcome to Soulless.
We are the generation that laughs at death.

Reincarnation; what was once considered a gift of immortality has become an eternity of nightmares.

Nadia Richards lives in a world plagued by reincarnation, a system of recycling souls where all past memories, personalities and traumatic events are relived daily in disjointed sequences. Trapped within their own warped realities, not even the richest and most powerful are saved from their own minds unraveling. Madness is the new human nature, and civilizations are crumpling beneath themselves trying to outrun it.

Within a society that ignores death, Nadia appears to be the one exception to the reincarnation trap. Born without any reincarnated memories and with printless eyes, the hot tempered 19 year old quickly becomes the ultimate prize to all those wishing to end the vicious cycle, or for some, to ensure they could evade death forever.

Review:
Jacinta Maree has an amazing way of captivating the imagination. She has created a world where you can get lost in the character and root for them when they are lost and down. I loved how Nadia, the main character has no soul imprint (No reincarnated memories) She is such a strong person and willing to do anything for the ones she loves, even when they betray her. She spends the entire book fighting for her life and hiding who she is. Although the ending is a major cliff hanger, I loved every minute and would recommend this read to anyone who loves a great dystonia fantasy.

Review:
This book started off with a bang. The main character, an epic heroin births a blade of fire from her chest. How much more exciting could it get? I found that I was quickly lost though, There was a lot of world building that was missing and I couldn't keep up with the scene changes and new magical things that had no previous explanation. I have to say though, this author has a way with words and kept me reading all the way to the end.

Bound by Duty #Playlist Guest Post by Stormy Smith and #GiveAway @stormysmith

Hi everyone! Stormy Smith here.

Music is a HUGE part of my life. I am addicted to Spotify and adore finding new artists. I spend a lot of time getting to know local artists and live shows are among my favorite places to be. When I wrote Bound by Duty I knew it would have a soundtrack. Every significant moment in my life has a song associated with it and the book I spent a year pouring myself into would be no different!

I’m a little bit of an odd duck in that I can’t actually write listening to music that has words. So, I spend my writing hours listening to classical music that helps distract my mind just enough to keep the creativity flowing without stopping the lovely voices in my head from telling me their stories. But, once I’m in the car, cleaning, or doing anything else, I’ve always got an ear out for songs. I find that the lyrics often inspire new plot lines, emotions or authentic reactions in characters.

You can check out the full Spotify soundtrack for BBD here, but here are my top ten in no particular order!

1. The One That Got Away – The Civil Wars
2. Haunted – A Taylor Swift cover by Jess Moskaluke and Alex G.
3. In My Veins – Andrew Belle, featuring Erin McCarley
4. Hurricane – MSMR
5. Clarity – A Zedd cover by Corey Gray
6. Boston – Augustana
7. I’mnotwaiting – Bonne Finken
8. Breathe Again – Sara Bareilles
9. Promising, Promises – Jon McLaughlin
10. No Light, No Light – Florence and the Machine

It was really important to me to not only cover the storyline with my choices, but also the emotions of the characters. Music is really important to Amelia, my heroine, and she often lets herself get lost in it. I didn’t want to date my story by announcing the songs and artists in the book, but in my head I always knew what she was listening to.

Bound by Duty is truly a coming of age story. It’s a paranormal fantasy that explores the many layers of what makes a person themselves. Is it your family, your duty, the ones you love, the pieces of you that you can’t control or the family (i.e. friends) you choose for yourself? How do you balance the person you are with the life you want? Amelia faces all of these questions as she finds herself with her first-ever best friend – a sassy Southern girl – and her first dose of young love. But there are situations out there bigger than she ever imagined and she has to decide who she’s going to be and what she’s made of.

Synopsis for Bound by Duty: Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she's an Elder, but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control, but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she's betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and doesn't even know his name.

Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky southern girl, or fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is, not what she will become.

As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head win the battle, or her heart?

If you decide to give Bound by Duty a shot, I’d love to hear the songs it brought to mind for you! Hook up with me at www.facebook.com/authorstormysmith or @stormysmith on twitter.

Excerpt:

To set the stage, Amelia Bradbury is our heroine and the center of this next scene. Amelia knows that she is an Elder and that she is betrothed to marry the prince of the Immortals. What she doesn’t know is the source of the power that continues to grow and evolve inside her and what that power will mean for her future. All Amelia wants is a little bit of time to be normal, but she’s about to meet the guy who will forever change the way she looks at herself and what she wants from life.

An excerpt from Bound by Duty:

As soon as I stepped out on the giant deck, the sea air hit my face. It tangled in my hair, whipping it around my shoulders as if playing hide and seek in the dark strands. I exhaled, not realizing I had been holding my breath. I stood there a moment, just listening to the waves beat against the sand as the tide came in. The full moon came out from behind the clouds, brightening my path and leading me to the stairs that would take me down to the beach. I didn’t hesitate. Almost leaping to the bottom, I kicked my gladiator sandals off as soon as I hit the sand and ran toward the water. Just as the tide touched my toes, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

Someone was there. Instantly, a jolt of power raced through my veins. I tried frantically to calm it back down, to maintain control. But, against all effort, I’m sure my eyes went from their normal hazel to bright violet, as they always do when my power takes over. I stood there, staring out at the sea, trying to decide how to react. I couldn’t draw attention to myself, but I could protect myself if I had to — I had learned that much. I felt my power build; like small pinpricks of electricity racing through my veins, filling my blood inch by inch. I forced myself to soften my stiff posture, but kept my right hand open and out in front of me in case I needed to use it.

Since moving to Brighton, I’d been working to actually use my magic, but it still felt like a second person trapped inside me that I couldn’t force into compliance. Sometimes it worked with me, sometimes not. We’ve been fighting this battle for as long as I can remember and in times like these, when I didn’t know what I was dealing with, I trusted it more than myself. I stood there, my body still as my power rippled beneath the surface and cautiously probed around me, just waiting to be unleashed. I slowly started to turn around when he said, “Oh, so you’re hiding from them too, huh?”

His voice was smooth and almost melodic, with just a little fire behind it. I somehow knew he was smirking even though I couldn’t see him. The moonlight hadn’t breached the shadow from the deck where I could see his outline sitting on a picnic table. He was sitting on the top with his feet on the bench and elbows on his knees. I heard the old, weather-beaten table creak and groan as he set his feet on the ground. A shiver ran through me; he looked dangerous.

“Do I know you?” Something told me I’d seen him before. The fear that had ignited my magic instantly turned to curiosity, the danger melting to intrigue. I could actually see the thready, purple wisps spreading out, poking around, trying to get a read on him. It’s a good thing humans don’t actually see our power unless we let them. Abruptly, I turned back toward the ocean, kicking myself as I mentally drew it back in.

What am I doing?! I don’t even KNOW this guy. What if he’s...?

“You don’t have anything to worry about,” he interrupted, as if reading my thoughts. I could hear his voice coming closer, a little tentative, feeling me out.

I’m sure he thinks I’m nutcakes. Well done, Amelia. You are here to blend in, not prompt people to think you’re a freak a month into the semester.

I sighed, took a breath, and turned to face him, not realizing how close to me he now was. The full moon cast light and shadow across his body as he stood just feet from me, silent, sizing me up as I did the same to him. I drew in a quick breath as all my thoughts came together in just two words. He’s gorgeous.

I couldn’t stop my eyes from roaming. There was something tortured about him, I could feel it as easily as I felt my own curiosity building. He stood just a few feet from me, clearly trying not to be intimidating. But, between the hints of a tattoo peeking out from under his black T-shirt and the leather cuffs on his wrists, there was an intensity he couldn’t hide. He had big eyes with long lashes a girl would kill for. As my gaze followed the strong, angular features of his face, I realized he had a dimple, just on the one side that must only come out when that corner of his mouth lifted into the smirk I had heard in his voice earlier. The one he was wearing now as he watched me watching him. For some reason, that dimple changed everything; transformed him in my mind as just being a boy on a beach.
